Not going to lie, it's been a pretty brisk greeting from Sydney winter after a month in tropical paradise. I know most people don't even consider Australian winter, winter.... But for us... it's cold.
As it gets colder, I do find myself trying to simplify things in my wardrobe. Seeking comfort and warmth above all else (it's instinctive right?). But there is no need for comfort and warmth to be synonymous with boring. And sometimes, with the right pieces, layering a ridiculous amount of cumbersome layers isn't always necessary. Trust me, I've spent too many years as a poor student layering up a stupid amount of thin layers that amount to little to no significant increase in warmth to waste my time anymore.
Investing in good quality pieces can honestly make all the difference. And personally I would first venture to invest in pieces that are both closest and the furtherest away from your body. I.e. your underlayer and your coat... incase that wasn't clear.
UNDERLAYERS
I know thermals generally fall into the category of hiking/camping/general outdoorsy activities. However a simple light thermal (preferably in a neutral colour i.e. black) is the perfect piece to layer under those jumpers we buy for looks alone, that really don't make the cut in terms of warmth. If you don't want to go so far as a thermal, then I would consider a wool blend skivvy type item. It's perhaps a little more stylish and appropriate to actually display (i.e. layering under a dress or slip top).
OVERLAYERS
Now jackets. Again, I've wasted too much money and time shivering in less-than-warm-but-on-trend coats to know that actually, one good quality coat is a game changer. Opting for a classic black or grey coat is a fail-safe (camel is also very versatile). I usually look for something thicker, with a wool-blend (if you're into that), with a decent collar and mid-thigh length. I know I'm not wearing a coat in the above outfit so enter.....
ALL THE OTHER LAYERS
1.Knitwear
Chunky knits, from natural fibres, that are better quality... are you guessed it... going to be better quality warmth control. Also yes, an open weave knit is pretty, but warmth wise, its pretty useless if your considering warmth so think again.
2. Denim
Our obsession with stretch denim has in my opinion gone too far. I take issue with overly stretchy denim for reasons I won't talk about right now. But actually opting for a stiffer denim (aka vintage denim is a winner) is both flattering and cosier than the average pair of jean you'll find on the shelf these days.
3. Hats/headwear
We've all heard about all the heat escaping through our heads. And by anecdotal evidence along (aka personal experience), I've found this to be pretty true. But this doesn't have to mean rocking a beanie, because, lets face it... that just isn't always an option. I'm obsessed with this hat from 66 the label, and it does a surprising job of keeping my little ears and noggin toasty.
Also learn from my mistakes and wear a boot of some kind to shield your ankles from the cold...
