The statement tee.
An unwavering wardrobe staple, and also a kind of time capsule of the issues and/or trends that were relevant at the time of its creation.
This t-shirt in particular is making two statements for me.
The first, and more obvious, is about equality.
Equality for all – regardless of gender, race, culture, sexuality.
No, wearing a statement t-shirt won’t move mountains… but we do underestimate the power we have to perpetuate change in even the smallest decisions we make day to day. It’s time to remove the lens of our own privilege, and throw away justifications made purely on history or habit. It’s up to us to recognise that any irks we may have against equality, in any of its contexts, is a result of that lens and influenced by our own experience.
The second statement is a little more subtle, so I’ll give you some context.
This t-shirt is made by People Tree, an ethical, sustainably produced label that was featured in eye-opening fast fashion documentary The True Cost. And thus signals a shift I’ve wanted to bring to light on my website for a while now, as I start to focus more and more on ethical, sustainable fashion.
I will preface this shift with… I am not a perfect person, and this is an imperfect world/industry. But things ARE changing.
I thought I’d share with you my all time favourite motto to live by that relates to all things regarding ethical fashion, vegan lifestyle, learning new skills etc..
PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION
If we get caught up chasing perfection, we tend to become discouraged, frustrated, critical and may even give up altogether.
So in light of that, soon you will be seeing/reading more about the labels that are creating consciously, both environmentally and ethically (re: humans and animals alike). More style posts featuring ways to re-invent and re-style pieces in your existing wardrobe and some general life hacks to live a more sustainable life.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
